Philippines: A Journey Begins

A young couple, newly married and starting their life together, is also starting a new journey with the Lord.

  • New Life Together

Cherry and Rudy, newly married and starting their life together, are also starting a new journey with the Lord.

My husband and I have known Cherry and her boyfriend Rudy for about six years. Rudy grew up in a very controlling, traditionally religious family and has never read the Bible before. Rudy and his family are from Danao, a spiritually dark city north of where we live.

On the other hand, Cherry grew up in a Bible-believing family in another part of the Philippines. They met in the city and were recently married.

A few months ago, we had breakfast with the two of them. My husband David asked Rudy if he would be willing for the four of us to meet weekly and study the Bible together. With his nice big smile, Rudy gave a definite and resounding “NO!”

But since that time, God took a hold of Rudy’s heart. He recently asked us if we could meet them for breakfast, and we began our first Bible study together! Rudy had no idea about the Old and New Testament, how to find books of the Bible, or what chapters or verses meant. It was so amazing to see Rudy’s openness and acceptance of God’s Word. Several times during the study, he said, “I really like this!” At the end of our time together, he said, “I really like this, but I am angry that my religion led my family astray, and that they are trapped in it.” He already has a sense that he is responsible to help his family understand the truth of God’s Word, and it scares him. We are praying that God continues to work in Rudy’s life and will continue to show His truth to this young couple.

As we meet with Cherry and Rudy on Tuesday mornings, I almost feel like we are watching God put the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle together because Rudy is from a city that we have been praying about reaching out to in the future. Might Rudy and Cherry be part of that? We don’t know, but God does!
